Stellenbosch Wine Estates
Welcome to Stellenbosch Wines, Wine Farms and Vineyards on the Stellenbosch Wine Routes. Stellenbosch is the second oldest wine region in South Africa and is set in the heart of the Cape Winelands .
Stellenbosch has many historic and venerable, as well as new, wine farms and vineyard estates in the winelands surround in the town, producing some of the best wines in the country, and indeed the world.
Traditionally Stellenbosch is famous for its white wines which are of the highest quality. However Stellenbosch wine makers have also begun concentrating on producing quality red wines and have made significant progress in producing some really good reds. Cabernet sauvignon is the most popular red wine grape planted in Stellenbosch with Shiraz and Merlot equally popular in second place.
Nevertheless the whites wines produced in Stellenbosch are among the best that South Africa has to offer. About 40% of the vines grown in the Stellenbosch area are white wine grapes with nearly half that total being sauvignon blanc and the balance made up of chenin blanc, chardonnay and semillion.
South Africa is regarded as a new world wine producer, having lately taken the wine world by storm, however, the first wines were pressed from grapes long ago during the days of Jan van Riebeeck in 1659 in Cape Town. Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa, was founded in 1679 and in the early 1680's settlers, mainly Huguenots from France began establishing wine estates and were soon producing wine which found a ready market among growing population of the early cape settlements and the Mother City of Cape Town.
In the 1800's, Cape wines became popular during the war between France and the British, but the market collapsed soon after the war ended due to France re-establishing its wine industry in the 1900's.
Through the turn of the 19th century into the early 20th century, German and Italian settlers flocked to the Cape, adding their own expertise and traditions of wine making to the growing wine industry in the winelands of South Africa. Stellenbosch wineries in the 1970's developed the Stellenbosch Wine Route to attract tourists and wine lovers to wine tasting venues on their estates although this was limited by South Africa's international isolation. With the advent of a democratic South Africa in 1994 the tourism market began expanding with wine tourism becoming increasingly popular.
It was only in 1997 when KWV was privatized and the wine industry was deregulated, that the modern South African Wine industry came into its own and entered into the International arena, its wines competing quite successfully in the global market. At this time, with South Africa's reintegration in the global village, the Wine Route of Stellenbosch came of age and began to be acclaimed worldwide.
